Yala and Wilpattuwa National Parks are among the best places in Asia to see these rare cats. Yala is known for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world. The Sri Lankan leopard is found nowhere else on Earth, and spotting one resting on a rock or draped along a branch is a moment you'll never forget.

Sri Lanka is home to one of Asia's largest wild elephant populations. Watch these gentle giants graze, bathe and wander freely at Udawalawe and Minneriya. Minneriya is famous for "The Gathering", the largest known gathering of Asian elephants in the world, when hundreds come together beside the reservoir in the dry season.

Rare, wild and mysterious.
The Sri Lankan sloth bear is a special treasure of the island's wilderness. Shy and rarely seen, it rewards patient travellers with one of the most memorable sightings of any safari. Wilpattuwa and Yala offer some of the best chances to spot one.

The largest animal on Earth.
The seas off Mirissa and Trincomalee are among the best places to see blue whales. Watching the largest animals on Earth glide through the ocean is a truly magical experience. Head out at first light, when the sea is at its calmest, and keep an eye out for dolphins along the way.

Sri Lanka's most famous park, where scrub jungle, lagoons and rocky outcrops create one of the world's best leopard habitats. You may also see elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and abundant birdlife.
North-West · Best time: Feb–Oct · Known for: Leopards & sloth bears
Sri Lanka's largest national park, dotted with natural lakes known as "villus". It is quieter and wilder than Yala, and a favourite of travellers seeking leopards and sloth bears away from the crowds.
Southern Province · Best time: Year-round · Known for: Elephants
Open grasslands and a large reservoir make this one of the most reliable places in Asia to see wild elephants, often in big family herds. The nearby Elephant Transit Home cares for orphaned calves.
North Central Province · Best time: Aug–Nov · Known for: The Gathering
Home to the great elephant Gathering, when hundreds of elephants come to graze and drink beside the tanks. It combines beautifully with Sigiriya and the ancient cities.
